Remotes and keypads, set for whoever lives there

A tenant moved out, you bought a new car, or a remote went missing. Changing who can open your garage takes minutes, and sometimes you can do it yourself.

When a remote or a code needs sorting out

  • A tenant moved out, and you don't know how many remotes left with them.
  • Someone lost a remote, or it went with a car you sold.
  • The new car's garage button won't talk to the opener.
  • The keypad takes the code some days and not others.
  • The remote works only when you're almost at the door.
  • No remote works at all, but the wall button still does.

The learn button, and what it erases

The learn button is on the motor unit, often under the light cover or beside the hanging antenna wire. Press it and let go, then press the remote while the learn light is on. The opener light blinks or the motor clicks when it takes the code.

Hold the learn button down instead, and many openers wipe all the remotes and keypad codes they have stored. That's handy when you want a clean start, and a nasty surprise late at night when you only meant to add one remote.

A new tenant gets new codes

Roughly one home in two in the city of Fort Myers is a rental. When a tenant leaves, their remotes, the keypad code they knew and their car's built-in button keep opening the garage until someone wipes them. For owners and property managers we erase every code stored in the opener, pair only the remotes you'll hand the next tenant, set a new keypad code and write down what's paired. Book it for move-out day and it's done before the keys change hands.

The button in your car

Most cars pair with the opener in a few minutes, following the steps in the car's manual. Some can't talk to a newer rolling-code opener without a small adapter. If yours is one of them, you hear it from us up front, with the adapter in the written price.

Questions about remotes, keypads & car buttons

Press and release the learn button on the opener's motor unit, then press the remote button while the learn light is still on. The opener light blinks or the motor clicks when it accepts the code. Don't hold the learn button down: on many openers that erases every remote.

Yes. Until someone erases the codes stored in the opener, an old remote, keypad code or car button still opens the garage. It's a short visit, and it can be booked for move-out day.

Yes, in most cases. Some cars need a small adapter to work with newer rolling-code openers; if yours does, we say so before any work begins.

Tell us what the door is doing

A person answers, day or night. Describe the door or text a photo, and you'll hear what it probably is, how long the fix takes and when a truck can get to you.
